Update April

April 23, 2008

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!

Back to the UK in the Hymer next week for 10 days.

Loaded down with 10 dozen bottles of wine and over 40 wine boxes for relatives!

I am hoping to do a deal on another running FZR600,scruffy but sound,for £250.

(to be picked up on another trip)

Managed  to fit a goodridge braided brakehose system

to the FZR racer today and

after a 2 month wait for the fiberglass race seat

-took all the plastics to pal Nick to be sprayed.

I,ve plumped for Yamaha red/white and black

-with R/W/black speedblock graphics.

Got the club and FFM racing licence applications so all is looking good.

The weather has been AWFUL for weeks and we havent been out on the trails at all-TOO WET.

Took a couple of days out to camp in the Dordogne-so beautiful!

Sarlat,Domme,Rocamadour-sensational.

Although only about 100 miles south,

it is so much warmer than here in the Limousin.

We are thinking maybe we should move down there.

We,ll see.

OH nearly forgot

-I,m bidding on a yummy SP370 based race bike on UK ebay

-hope I win it.

What do you think?

OWD STUFF

April 23, 2008

Limoges”salon des motos” annual bike show was a huge success.
Beautiful spring weather brought the Limousin bikers out in droves…..
crowds of bikers
There were the usual trade stands and club stands….

How about a hub steering Bimota Tesi at 28,000 euros!
Tesi

In the smaller hall was “a history of the motorcycle” from the earliest days. An amazing collection- and an amazing bit of organisation, since all the bikes were individually owned and displayed. I,ve posted lots of pictures for you-see how many you can recognise!…………..

How about a “barn find Harley”-patina or what???
barnfindharley

Or 4 cylinders, swept back bars AND pedals!

A 5 cylinder bike, arranged in rotary fashion, holder of numerous speed titles(over 220km per hour on bicycle tyres).

Is this bike a Henderson?

What a lovely Benelli-great colour!

Or a Keihler Scoffier-neat name? 220 plus kph – not with me on board,no sir;

There were loads of others including a Triton -ex Ron Haslam!
Vincents,AJS,Nortons,Indians,talking of which-aint this a beauty!

All in all a very nice day out! :p

ps I,ve loads more pictures of old bikes from the show-email me and I,ll send them on

The likely lads……….

April 21, 2008

“Whatever happened to old……?”

Mr Fitforx-Roger Hammond?

I can report he is alive and well,
living the good life in the tranquillity of Champagnac la Riviere,
in the Limousin in central France.

“Where the hell is Champagnac la where….?” -I hear you say!

Suffice it to say,a million miles
from the hurly burly of his former business life
in the West Midlands!

With time on his hands
to devote to the restoration of his eclectic collection of bolides
-dirt and tarmac-his available space in the “sous sol”
below his lovely new house grows smaller every day

as his list of acquisitions grows-nearly 30 at the last count!

I,ve said it before- its a virus
-once in the blood ,you can never get rid of the biking bug!

Roger is quite happy to potter about-why not?
Last year he started his retirement
in idyllic rural France with an unplanned
first hand experience of the French Medical system!
Years of inappropriate ,uncaring medical treatment in the UK
resulted in an emergency;near critical situation for Roger.
Fortunately,good sound BASIC diagnosis
by the French Cardiac team bottomed the problem,
treated it ,and now Roger is probably better than ever!

He is very keen to do some twin shock enduros
here in France and has been busy buying appropriate machinery to do so
-a PE250,an SWM and a CZ scrambler!(dont tell Ann his wife!
She didnt know about the 3 lockup garages full of bikes in the UK
-she thought there was one!Still I,m sure she,s got lots of clothes ,
hidden in the wardrobe
HE doesnt know about-eh!Know what I mean guys?)

Here,s one of Rogers bikes- a lovely 250 Ossa enduro

Beautiful, original plastics-too nice to risk damaging in competition?

He could be persuaded to part with it
-cross his palm with 3000 euros!

Or how about a Greeves Silverstone special?

A Silverstone frame,a hybrid motor
-Alpha bottom end,the rest unknown!

250cc-very quick,very light-diminutive size.
Last major outing-Hoghton Tower sprint

LUVVERLY JUBBLY!

Interested?-send him an email at roger.hammond@orange.fr

-he might part with it if the price is right! :P

Name and shame

April 20, 2008

Whats in a name?

My name is Cheetham-yes I,ve heard them all!

My Dad was a chartered accountant before retirement.

Could you remember your accountants name?

Probably not.

EVERYONE remembered Jack Cheetham,the accountant-SUCCESS GUARANTEED.

(a bit like Mr Lamb the butcher ,Mr Plug the plumber etc)

When I was at school in the 60,s in Stoke on Trent,

the Head of parks and cemeteries was Mr Dyer;

the chief fire officer-Mr Burns,

chief accountant-Mr Swindells-GOOD EH?

How about daft names though,

Ophelia Bott for example!

Or our pals grandson-Valentino Duckworth(But then Grandads name is Lancelot!)

Penny Chew?Mary Fairey?

Ignorant or peevish parents?

A chinese shop”moronsworld”

A shelved perfume to be launched in Japan.

Apparantly the Japanese manufacturers wanted a romantic Edwardian name

and picked”My Fanny”(by gaslight fame)

Imagine ”you smell divine Darling -whats that scent?”

“Oh its ”my Fanny”"

Something lost in Translation?

In France there is a transport firm called”Fockadey”(……helps you work, rest, and play?)

They call videos K7(pronounced in frenc Ka-set-gedditt?)

Or K dos for gifts(cadeaux)

The cardinal being considered for the Popes job,

last time round was Cardinal Sicola-POPESICOLA

I dont think so…….

How about the Toyota MR2 in France?

“emm air deux”-MERDE (shit)

Motorcycles dont escape

A catchy French bike name?

-send me any names that you know that will tickle a rib or two

How about a Japanese crash helmet ”breakwind”

The yamaha Freewind of course

Or the latest limited edition MV Brutale to be launched in Germany

“THE WALLY”

Can you believe someone didint check???? :P

Bargain bourse

April 19, 2008

montessabourse
Went to the bourse at Chabanais last weekend.

A “bourse” is the same as a British autojumble for cars and bikes.

I dont think Ive ever seen so much rusty metal outside of Steptoes junkyard.

Acres of rusty lumps of metal-the rustier and more obscure the object-the higher the asking price.

When we arrived there was an English guy just leaving on his immaculate HRD.

He was a huge guy and made the big V twin look like a 125!

hrdchabanais

There were some obscure French marques-how about this one-a Follis?

follisfrenchsingle

And what on earth is this supposed to be?

Anyone fancy a pair of rusty sidecars?

or a Rust finish 2CV?

2 examples of the Smart car forerunner?48cc Sachs engine-WOW!

A lovely little Peugeot (“apply at the bar”-price varies with state of intoxication?)

The highlight of the show was a Porsche Spider replica(not for sale)-very tasty!

porschespyderreplica

Do any of the traders ever sell anything?

The busiest stand was an English guy selling tools;I bought 2 sockets and some zip ties.

It was that exciting.

Bye :P

Thanks

April 19, 2008

Thanks to everyone who has visited my blog!

Yesterday saw the 1000th visitor to the site!

It is very encouraging and gives me heart to carry on.

MZ ISDT replica

April 17, 2008

Heres one from earlier!

1978 to be exact!

I bought one of these,(this is a library photo- one of my old ones below )

totally original, from a funeral director in Bury Lancs.

Following his instructions I arrived at the large Victorian house and was shown into the “workshop”.

There, leaning against an empty coffin (some of the others were “occupied”) was the MZ.

I do have to say it looked the part;

leather toolbag set into the tank;

Airbox and carb protected by a canvas cover;

fully enclosed chaincase.

-this was a bike BUILT TO DO THE JOB!

not a poseurs machine.

Clouds of blue 2stroke fumes obscured the “last resting place” as the beastie was kicked into life.

A quick belt up the Manchester Rd – (sans helmet of course) – proved the integrety of the German Marque.

A deal was done, bike to trailer secured and back to Derbyshire -”James,dont spare the horses”

FAST-hell yes!

This bike was a classic – and as a classic should have remained in a museum!

Incredibly harsh suspension (such as it was!) very fierce power delivery…………..

Like the Goldstar or the 7R,the Manx or the Thruxton before it-the memory is often sweeter than the reality!

The east Germans who rode these machines in anger have my greatest respect!:P

Big Offs

April 11, 2008

Its a bit of a trueism-you never fall off when you think you,re going to
and vice versa;

Most spills seem to happen through a lack of concentration or a minor mistake.

Occasionally you are caught out by circumstance.

The following incidents happened outside my control.
(In a future post I,ll relate a couple of incidents where judgement was at fault.)

I lost control of my Honda 400 Four, on a cobbled street in Paris

I was on the way back from the 1976 BOL D,OR at Le Mans.

(heres a couple of photos from the pit lane
-Phil Read and Tony Rutter riding for Honda)

Dave“Crasher” Croxford-too many crashes to list

(seen here minus fairing-lost in a nightime spill!

was it a Norton-Iforget,)
but amazingly -NO broken bones in a distinguished career

ANYWAY I was overtaking a van ,

when I saw diesel sloshing out of his uncapped filler

-in a blink of an eye I was sliding across the cobbles into the opposite curb.

Fortunately I avoided hitting any cars as I slid,but gave my elbow a hell of a bash;

The bike had bent handlebars and a smashed pannier,

which had saved the rest of the bike from damage.

Needless to say, nobody stopped to help.

I found a Honda garage a few miles up the road,

who changed the bars for me.

Having lost several hours in Paris

I flogged the bike up to Boulogne,

only to see my prebooked Hovercraft

disappearing out to the open sea.

I managed to get a later crossing

and spent the night in London with an old mate.

The irony was that I,d left my pal Roger Harvey and his girlfriend

asleep in a friends flat in Paris

-disgruntled cos I was anxious to make a start-

they wanted breakfast and a lie- in.

Guess who arrived home in the UK at the planned time?

Out on the trail in France,

I was leading a group of clients,on a Green Mountain tour

We were passing slowly through a farmyard,

At the exit the trail continued down a rocky track between the trees.

Leaving the road ,I dived onto the trail,
BANG

Flat on my back,instantaneously!

I hadnt seen the neck-high baling twine spanning the track,

presumably left there by the farmer

who had obviously been moving his cows.

Fortunately I was unhurt, but the incident shook everyone up

It could have been nasty.

An error of judgement or unavoidable?

The twine was thin and dark, undetectable in the shadowy lane.

Could I have foreseen the danger?

What do you think?

I must admit I am VERY observant in similar situations these days.:P

a grand day out!

April 10, 2008

A grand day out!

The day dawned sunny and bright………

A young man,s thoughts drifted off to a land of may blossom,
mud and ruts,
with the wandering by ways-beckoning forth.
A promise of newly discovered adventure and chummy escapades
-a land of Swallows and Amazons……
Well actually it was a very nice sunny day(for a change)
and me and Junior Cheetham
fancied leaving the ladies to their shopping
while we went mudplugging
-THATS ABOUT IT REALLY!

Suitably clobbered up and gassed up
-we sallied forth into the Limousin paysage in search of adventure.

This was the first trip for the new Beta 200.
I have to say I was impressed!
The suspension is adequate,if not special.

The motor is a peach!
Very smooth and torquey-no hint of a powerband
-just an utterley predictable build up of speed.
The substitution of the front sprocket
-a 12 tooth instead of a 15
-means that a 50mph top speed
is little inconvenience for the trials like bottom end gained.
It is possible to drop to a slow walking pace
and smoothly pull away with no wheelspin
-great in slippery ,muddy conditions, like those we found today.
The centre of gravity feels very low ie very stable.
The whole plot squirms but never feels out of control.

This brings me to the main criticism:

THE TYRES!

How anyone can justify trailriding on trial tyres is beyond me!
Its like ice skating!
Its like greenlaneing on racing slicks!
Exciting-you betcha!
Safe-NO!
I will HAVE to address the rubber issue TOUTE SUITE!

(Any suggestions regarding tyre choice

from Alp owners would be very welcome)

We did a circuit of about 90kms

-out for about 5 hours
-and discovered some very interesting new trails.
The recent weather has been very wet
and so even the simplest green lanes proved challenging,
to say the least.

I think we found what is probably the longest, wettest trail in this area
-about 5 miles of pedalling through enormous tank tracks;
strange when the going in this part of the neighbouring Charente
is normally very open farmland!

Altogether a very enjoyable mix of wide open tracks and leafy forest trails.

UPSETS-very few;
a minor problem within the first KM,
when the petrol cap decided to abandon ship,
covering me with a shower of petrol!

A near “squashing” incident with a kamikaze pine martin…

A lamb that had to be rescued from a frantic fence incident
(why is the grass always greener?)

Of course ,as ever,we saw nobody on the trail
-trairiding down here is such a pleasure.

I must admit I am a little sore tonight
,but then I take great solice from the admission
that my 26 year old son “may ache a bit tomorrow”

Its really great that I can still “DO IT”
(whether it takes me a week to recover is irrelevant……..)

I,M STILL DOING IT! :P

Forgotten sights

April 8, 2008

Remember these?

Heres a couple of rare photos

things you may have forgotten about.

Firstly
some cowslips-lovely wild flowers

seldom seen these days in the UK,

but a common spring flower here in France.

cowslips.jpg

Secondly

how many of you remember my epic second place

as a privateer ,at Philip Island

in the Oz motogp a few  years ago

with  that young Valentino just pipping me at the post on his Honda………………..
